Environment

Schöppingen is located in the western Münsterland (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany), near the Dutch border. The cities of Münster and Enschede / NL are each half an hour away by car.

The Westmünsterland is mostly flat and invites you to cycle along castles and parklands. While agriculture still determines the landscape today and the region was characterized by a monostructure just a few decades ago, the economic development proceeded towards today’s broad mix of industries.

The open-mindedness of the place is not only shaped by the neighborhood to the Netherlands. The stationing of a NATO unit on the Schöppinger Berg gave Schöppingen a positive swing in the population curve in the 1960s to the 1980s. With the fall of the German-German border in 1989, DDR emigrants and subsequently emigrants from the former Eastern Bloc countries were accommodated in a supraregional reception center in the former barracks. Since 1992 the barracks site has been used by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia as a central accommodation facility for the initial reception of asylum seekers.

With the establishment of the NATO barracks in 1963, and for a limited time, a control and launch base for air raid defence missiles went into operation. The Münster University of Applied Sciences has now set up an antenna test site here. Radio amateurs use the site of the former fire control area to take part in European and worldwide amateur radio competitions. Wind turbines have shaped the Schöppinger Berg since 1992.

Cultural attractions close to Schöppingen are the Rock and Pop Museum in Gronau, the Landesmusikakademie in Heek and the Center for Literature at Burg Hülshoff in Havixbeck. The eventful regional history can be seen, for example, in the kult Westmünsterland in Vreden or in the LWL industrial museum TextilWerk in Bocholt.
